An e-money institution (EMI) is a firm authorised to issue electronic money and to provide payment services such as payment accounts, cards and transfers. In the UK these firms are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011; across the EEA they are authorised by a national competent authority under the E-Money Directive and listed in the European Banking Authority’s central register.
This directory brings those separate registers into one place. Each entry records the firm’s licence type — authorised EMI, small EMI or payment institution — its home regulator, reference number and current authorisation status, and is re-checked against the source register on a weekly cadence. Listings whose licence has been withdrawn, lapsed or suspended are flagged or filtered out rather than left to go stale.
