How to look up an EMI by its FRN or national licence number

Using a Firm Reference Number (FRN) or a national licence number to find the exact e-money institution on the FCA or EBA register and avoid brand-name confusion.

The most reliable way to identify an e-money institution is by its licence number: a Firm Reference Number (FRN) on the UK FCA register, or the national authorisation number on the EBA EUCLID register. A number maps to one legal entity, whereas a brand or app name can be shared, rebranded or imitated.

Why the number beats the name

Many e-money products trade under a consumer brand that differs from the licensed legal entity behind them. One licensed institution may run several brands, and similar-sounding names cause genuine confusion. The licence number removes that ambiguity: it resolves to a single authorised entity and its current status.

Looking a firm up

  • UK (FCA). Search the Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk by FRN or by exact legal name. The FRN is a short numeric identifier shown on the firm's register entry and often in its terms.
  • EEA (EBA EUCLID). Each institution carries a national authorisation number assigned by its home competent authority, published in the EBA golden-copy register alongside its country and passporting data.

Once you have the right entity, confirm three things: the status reads as currently authorised, the licence type matches what you expected, and the record has been verified recently.

Every record in this directory is keyed to the institution's licence number and links the FCA or EBA source, so you can move from a brand you recognise to the exact authorised entity behind it.

Q: Where do I find a firm's FRN?

It is on the firm's FCA register entry and is frequently quoted in the firm's terms and conditions or website footer. If you only have a brand name, search the legal entity on the FCA register first, then read the FRN from the result.

Q: Two firms have almost the same name - how do I tell them apart?

Use the licence number, not the name. The FRN or national authorisation number points to exactly one legal entity. Matching on the number avoids confusing a licensed firm with an unlicensed look-alike.

Q: Does one licence number ever cover several apps or brands?

Yes. A single authorised EMI can operate multiple consumer brands under one licence. The number tells you which legal entity is actually authorised and safeguarding your funds.
